QSS - Biloela
CENTRAL REGION JUNIOR SQUASH WAKE UP CALL
Report from Mark Biggs
Compared to 2001, a larger and more enthusiastic group of juniors competed in the Biloela Junior Squash Legends tournament held on the weekend of the 16th and 17th February.
The tournament attracted 49 players from Rockhampton, Emerald, Bundaberg, Gladstone, and Biloela. This was the first time in five years that a significant number of juniors from Squash World (Rockhampton) and Lavers Centre (Gladstone) had competed in this tournament, and many of their respective players were in the placings.
Despite this being a wake up call for selectors, tournament organisers, and the sprinkling of Queensland-ranked players who attended, for twenty-two of the players, this was their first ever representative junior tournament. Some found their fitness still needs work after an intensive weekend of squash matches.
For the first time ever at this tournament, Division 1 and 2 matches included mixed doubles squash, which were counted in the final result for Division 1 placings. The two feature matches were Kacey Sinclair's (Rockhampton) win in four games over arch rival Kristal Johnston (Biloela) in Division 1 and Angela Edward's (Rockhampton) win in five games against Cameron Horchner (Biloela) in Division 2.
The tournament was played as divisions of ability rather than in age groups, however in some divisions there were still some great age match-ups, especially in the lower divisions. Other new players to impress were 11 year-old Rachel Mahon from Rockhampton, 10 year old Nyssa Hough from Gladstone, and 11 year old Ben Booth from Rockhampton. Full results are given below:-
