Hughes upsets Camilleri @ Wavell

Peta Hughes caused the biggest upset on Day 1 of the 2005 Charles Butcher Memorial when she beat fellow Queenslander Lisa Camilleri 3-0 in the second round of the Women's Open.

Hughes is an AIS scholarship holder and all the training over the past 12-14 months has began to pay dividends.

Hughes began the first and rattled the 2005 Q Open Champion racing to a commanding lead and ultimately closing the first game 9-4.

Camilleri commented after the match that "I played well but maybe a little too basic."

"Peta was reading me well ... she seemed to be there before I even hit it".

The "Rockhampton Rocket" won the next two games fairly comfortably 9-3 9-3.

Hughes said after the match "My plan was to get onto Lisa's boasts as early as I could and volley as much as possible to keep her under pressure".

Hughes added "I was surprised how well I was moving."

The match saw a well disciplined display of skill and tactics go 100% according to plan. Camilleri didn't appear to have a plan to turn the match around.

In the Men's Open all 8 seeds moved into the second round and the top 4 seeds moved on to the semi finals. There were no surprises but there were some GREAT matches.

[4] Carl Hampson's win against [5] Ryan Cuskelly was a quality win for the former South African. Hampson beat the AIS scholarship holder 11-9 8-11 11-6 11-10 (2-0).
